The Consequences of the Nigerian Spectacular $25 Million Museum and the Historic Artworks
Nigeria's stunning new Art Museum of West Africa (Mowaa) has found itself in the center of regional political struggles during the week it was expected to β but did not manage β to begin operations to the general public for the first time.
The Grand Vision
The 15-acre complex stands in the center of Benin's urban center, main city of the southern state of Edo β and contains an archaeological dig and structures planned by renowned British-Ghanaian architect Sir David Adjaye, particularly noted for the Smithsonian African American Museum that opened in the US capital in 2016.
It has been half a decade in the making β and is designed to showcase both the past and the present of artistic expression in the region renowned for the Benin Bronzes, artworks looted from the royal palace by British soldiers in the 1800s.
Setup and Prospects
It is notable β and before the planned opening, Mowaa was active with employees determined to demonstrate it is a place that can match established museums and galleries in the Europe and America.
Within conservators meticulously unwrapped art pieces from protective packaging, inspecting each artifact and taking meticulous records before placing them on display surfaces and plinths.
Experts fine-tuned environmental controls. In the scientific facility, staff members adjusted devices meant to maintain ancient objects.
Investment and Economic Plans
The initiative has been the concept of businessman Phillip Ihenacho β presently Mowaa's executive director.
"I aim us to have a significant economic benefit on communities in the vicinity," he explained to media outlets, mentioning that he aspired to make the city "a cultural destination."
Mowaa, a not-for-profit local organization, envisions itself creating over 30,000 employment opportunities and providing above $80m annually to the area arts sector through partnerships and programming.
Investment and Administrative Problems
It has needed $25m to achieve this stage β money collected from multiple contributors, such as the international partners, the British Museum and the regional authorities.
But now the state authorities has withdrawn support from beneath it β terminating the use of the land on which the facility was constructed.
An official representative explained this was because in the original paperwork it had identified as EMOWAA β and it had later eliminated "Edo" from its designation.
Demonstrations and Government Action
This announcement followed demonstrations on Sunday, when people entered the campus insisting it be named the Royal Benin Museum.
A boisterous group insulted international visitors at the facility before the inauguration β compelling them to be escorted out under police escort.
Head of state Bola Tinubu has also intervened to attempt to settle the tensions, setting up a special task force to do some damage control.
Governance Issues
But how has this become so politicised β and such a public relations crisis?
The majority of it comes down to internecine rivalries at a regional government level, as it was the former state leader Godwin Obaseki β whose term in office finished last year β who was a key supporter of the museum.
And it appears the leadership of the current leader, a close ally of the regional monarch, known as the traditional leader, may seek more of a stake in the project. The activists on that day, for example, were demanding that the facility be placed under the control of Oba Ewuare II.
The Benin Bronzes Controversy
This highlights the disputed topic of the Benin Bronzes, one of the region's most renowned cultural treasures.
Because even if the facility does eventually begin operations, these objects will be conspicuously absent.
They are brass, elephant tusk and timber carvings that once embellished the king's residence of the ancient kingdom before UK forces took them in the late nineteenth century during a punitive expedition.
Today, numerous remain scattered across institutions in Europe and North America -- such as the London museum, European center and the American museum.
Return Initiatives
Their homecoming has become one of the most disputed debates in the international art community. About 150 have now come back β and additional are scheduled to be repatriated.
When proposals for the museum in Benin City were first announced in recent years, the key players on the national arts community hoped it would become their perfect venue β a state-of-the-art complex to show them off to the global audience.
But the situation became complicated some time back after the federal government declared that the Oba would be the proper guardian of returned objects β and the royal household advocated for a institution under the king's authority, contrary to the desires of the ex-leader.
Strategic Positioning
This left Mowaa in a delicate position: asserting a specific viewpoint on return while remaining diplomatic on custodianship β and highlighting its larger purpose, which led to|c
